Adult Home Economics Classes at LPTTC

 

 

Courses offered include floral design, cake decorating, cooking, crafts, custom sewing, drapery making, quilting, painting, and drawing. This program has been a vital service to the community for 39 years. As adult educators, we are presented an exciting challenge and reward in meeting the continuing education needs of our adult students.

Any person 18 years of age or older and not attending day school may enroll.

Office Hours: Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Classes meet 3 hours per day, one day per week.

Not all courses are offered all the time. Please call for current schedule.

 

CAKE DECORATING I, II

This class teaches the use of basic equipment to decorate character cakes, birthday and other cakes.  The class includes basic borders, stars, drop flowers, roses, and designing ideas.  You will learn hints about baking and finishing a beautifully decorated cake for those special occasions. 

 

CAKE DECORATING III   

This class covers rolled fondant, royal icing flowers, tiered cakes (wedding) and more elaborate borders.

 

CROCHET/KNITTING

Students will choose to knit or crochet.  The knitters start with how to hold the needles and the yarn.  Then basic knit and purl stitches are taught.  After the third class the student may choose a pattern and yarn to start a project.  I lf the project is not completed in the allowed time, the student may register the next term and finish the project.  Crochet will start with the basic stitches.  Learn to make a sample piece, then progress to more advanced patterns.  The students will learn how to read and interpret the patterns.

 

DRAPERY/WINDOW TREATMENTS

Students may choose any window treatment they want.  Measuring, purchase of fabric, cutting and construction of the treatment will be done in class.  Students may bring a picture of the treatment they want to make or choose one from the ideas, which will be available in class.

 

FLORAL DESIGN

Learn the basics of floral design from choosing the right amounts and types of flowers to how to place them in the design effectively.  Students will choose the design and style, which suits the place the design will be used.

 

QUILTING

QUILTING/ HAND APPLIQUE

 

SEWING I

The basics of sewing and use of the sewing machine are emphasized.  Students will learn measurements, cutting, marking and basic construction techniques to make a lined vest.  Sewing machines are provided.  Pattern:  Simplicity #9630


SEWING II*

Continuation and review of techniques taught in Sewing I with the added instruction in zipper application, sleeves and collar.  Students will choose a pattern which includes at least one of these learning experiences.

SEWING III *  (Advanced)

Emphasis and demonstrations will be on special techniques such as seam finishes, hem finishes, collars, pockets, fabrics with special handling problems (nap, plaids, stripes, etc.). Students select advanced projects for this class.  Sewing machines are furnished.

*These two classes can be taught together with emphasis on the skill level of the students


SLIP COVERS AND ACCESSORIES

This class will teach you how to create a slipcover for your couch, chair, or a bedspread.  You will choose the project and the teacher will help you along the way.  Once you have decided on your slipcover then you can begin making the accessories such as pillows etc. that will help you complete the look for your room.

 

TOLE AND DECORATIVE PAINTING I

This is a class designed to introduce students to the basics of decorative painting with acrylics.  The student will learn the basic strokes involved in decorative painting.  They will also learn the basic methods of shading and highlighting used to accomplish three-dimensional depth in decorative painting.  The student will complete three projects as they accomplish these goals.  Decorative painting is a learned skill.  Painting or drawing skills are not required.  Estimated cost of supplies is about $75.00 These costs may be lessened if the student already has some supplies or if they wish to share with another student.  Supplies will be discussed at the first class, which is 1 hour.

TOLE AND DECORATIVE PAINTING II

This class is designed to continue the learning process of decorative painting.  Prior to enrolling in this class the student should be familiar with floating color, comma strokes, S-strokes, and C-strokes.  New techniques, brushes and more difficult projects will be completed.  The cost of supplies is dependent upon the project surface the student chooses to paint on.
